Energy bill gives
control of public and private
land to environmental lobby
By Gretchen Randall
The energy bill approved by the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee, mandates a new "national policy on wildlife and global warming" that, according to Kimberly Strassel of the Wall Street Journal, would require the Secretary of Interior to "assist" species adapt to climate change and "protect, acquire, and restore habitat" which is "vulnerable" because of climate change.
As Strassel points out, under the provisions in this bill, so-called environmental groups could argue that "every species is vulnerable to climate change" making even private property a target for federal government management. The bill is conveniently vague, using words such as "protect, assist, and "restore" which the Fish and Wildlife Service could interpret to prevent property owners from almost any activity on their own land, in the name of protecting wildlife from climate change harm.
The Journal article acknowledges that Natural Resources Committee Chairman, Representative Nick Rahall (D-WV), has staffers formerly with environmental groups such as Defenders of Wildlife, Wilderness Society, and Sierra Club, who helped write the bill. More than thirteen groups such as Earth Justice and Environmental Defense have endorsed the bill that will have to be passed by the full House.
