Plan now for Constitution Week
Constitution Day is September 17th, which falls on Sunday this year. Celebrations and programs may be held before, or after the 17th, but planning for successful events should begin now. Just a couple of months before mid-term elections, political campaigns are in full swing, and should be a natural place for individuals, and candidates, to advance the principles of freedom by promoting the U.S. Constitution and its values.
We are urging all of our members, and all the organizations affiliated with the property rights and resource use movement, to plan now to help promote the Constitution during Constitution Week. Our goal is to get the fantastic DVD “A More Perfect Union” shown in every middle school and high school in the country, and get a copy of the U.S. Constitution distributed in high school classes across the nation.
Here are a few ideas that may work in your community.
1. Get your local school board to adopt a resolution officially recognize Constitution Week by asking every school in the district to produce a program for all students that honors the Constitution. (See sample)
2. Get your organization, your church, your PTA, or civic club, to sponsor the distribution of a pocket-size Constitution to every student in the middle and/or high schools in your community. Most local merchants would be happy to contribute to a project for this purpose, especially if the name of the merchant could be publicized as a sponsor. It takes little imagination to make this happen; it does, however, take a little time and effort.
3. Two months before the mid-term election, candidates for every office will be trying to reach every audience possible. Candidates, and their supporters could gain positive recognition by providing a pocket-size Constitution along with campaign materials, and at rallies and picnics.
The Constitution we provide has a 3-inch x 2-inch space on the inside cover where the candidate can stamp his name and slogan, or any other message he wishes. Or a candidate could print a small adhesive label with a photo and a slogan. This would be a great way for a candidate to identify himself with the principles of the U.S. Constitution, and provide campaign material that people wouldn’t throw away.
4. Local cable access may be available in your community. The DVD “A More Perfect Union” could be aired, either as a two-hour movie, or the education version that is divided into five segments. Airing this DVD would be a great way to focus on the Constitution. During Constitution Week, a program could be aired each night, along with local teachers or politicians commenting on the various principles contained in the Constitution. Again, there is no limit to the imagination here; it just takes a little time and effort.
5. Your organization could present a draft resolution to your City Council or County Commission that recognizes Constitution Week. You might request that the city or county provide each employee with a copy of the Constitution, which either the city or county could fund, or you might get the local chamber of commerce, Realtors association, or merchants to fund.
These are just a few ways we can advance the principles of freedom by promoting the U.S. Constitution. Because the Center for Constitution Studies produces this DVD and this pocket-size Constitution is vast quantities, they are available for distribution at affordable prices.
