A letter from Richard Courtney in London

As one of the few socialists in contact with your organisation, I write to ask if you can help to inform American people of the wholehearted support and concern from the entire British nation following the terrorist atrocities in your country yesterday. For generations, British people have endured the terrorism of Irish 'nationalists' and 'loyalists' so we know the despair and uncertainty that terrorism provides.

And we know what it means to stand alone against evil. My parents' generation stood alone against the evil of Nazism for years, until the Soviet Union and the United States were forced to join the conflict. Please tell the American people that they are not alone. The British nation is united in our care for all those who have suffered as a result of the evil that struck yesterday.

Our Queen has sent your President a message of condolence to the American peoples. Our Prime Minister has declared our support and assistance in determination and punishment of the perpetrators. And our Parliament has been called from recess to meet tomorrow solely to debate our response to the events in New York and Washington (the terrorists need to be told that the expertise of British Intelligence Services is hunting them, and they already know the British SAS has the best assassins in the world).

Yours sincerely,

Richard S. Courtney
